Short Term Orthodontics Treatment

Dr. Ryan Swain: Like most general dentists when I came out of dental school, I knew little or nothing about orthodontics. I graduated from the University of Florida in 2002. I always had an interest in ortho, and thought about going back into ortho residency. I found a dentist from Boston who was doing some short term ortho procedure, treating adults in an average time of 6 months. I learned how to do it watching someone else’s dentist. 6 months is pretty quick. This is what makes it attractive to the patient. That’s what we’ve done with 6 Month Smiles. We teach courses on it and have developed it into a system for general dentists. We use tooth colored wires and braces. They are pretty much invisible. It’s specifically to address the needs of those adult patients who aren’t interested in traditional orthodontics.

Six Month Smiles Not a Replacement Traditional Orthodontics, It’s an Alternative

Dr. Ryan Swain “Traditional orthodontic treatment is the ideal treatment in most cases and that’s what we would recommend for most adult and children who have crooked teeth. An adult says I don’t want to do that and I don’t want to do it for 2 years. At 6 Months Smiles we use brackets and wires because they are more efficient and faster and ultimately we are focusing on the patients chief cosmetic complaints. It’s not a replacement for traditional ortho it’s an alternative for those who don’t want it. Mostly cases are bracketed from first molar to first molar, upper and lower arches, so we are moving most of the teeth in the mouth. If pre-molars are rotated or twisted, if there is spacing in the posterior, it’s not just anterior movement. Essentially what we are doing is about 90% of what is accomplished with traditional orthodontics and we are letting go of that 10% that takes a long time to do.”
